HAMPSTEAD
The clients owned an apartment on the ground and first floor of this Hampstead five-story house and later purchased the apartment in the basement.
Lyndall has reconfigured the layout to ensure that there is a flow between the two spaces. An extra side extension was added to house an additional staircase with a curved glazed handrail. A new rear extension was granted permission only if the roof height did not extend higher than 2.2m at the furthest point. By creating a glazed roof, the low ceiling height is no longer visible.
The clients expressly requested that there were no cupboards on the dining table side of the island so the side and rear of the kitchen island is covered in marble. The bespoke kitchen has been made with extra deep drawers that run the depth of the 1.2m island. Heavy duty runners have been used that can hold an exceptionally heavy load and the client happily stores seldom used cooking utensils in the rear part of the drawers. One of the clients is an excellent cook and uses the kitchen often to entertain, she is particularly happy with this bespoke arrangement.
